A Nice Recommendation from Vanessa Thevathasan (Founder & Executive Director at Between Borders) @VThevathasan
Surian has shown a keen interest in using art to bring greater visual focus to humanitarian and human rights crises globally. Having first seen Surian's work on Flickr and the brilliantly creative designs he produces, Between Borders has been delighted to feature an array of Surian's work across our website and most recently for our inaugural World Forced Displacement and Mental Health Day in February 2017, for which Surian produced exclusive artwork on Syria and the Rohingya for Between Borders. He pays due diligence to the stories of many of the people we are concerned with, for example using a 'ghosting' method as a way to signify the erasure of the stateless Rohingya from their birth country.
The kind of artwork Surian produces is important to us at Between Borders because it manages to tell a story of people in crisis without compromising their dignity. Surian has shown a great commitment to working with us, and we are grateful that he accepted our invite to join us as a creative partner in our consortium. Surian's artwork will also be featured on our upcoming festival later this year.
We are excited for what lies ahead for Surian. He has an amazing talent and continues to nurture this through exploring news techniques in his artwork. Surian's work has been widely shared online by various different organisations and media outlets covering an array of pertinent topics on conflict, cyberspace and security, disasters, displacement and much more. This is testament to Surian's creative footing within political, social and humanitarian issues.
Surian is highly recommended from all the team at Between Borders.
